Overview
Fostering Mutual Understanding in Early Relationships
The project investigates the intricacies of communication in early romantic relationships, particularly focusing on the ambiguities and conflicts that arise from misunderstandings in instant messaging. The project explores two speculative prototypes designed to enhance communication by introducing educational elements that help individuals better understand each other during text-based interactions.
Through a blend of interaction design principles and user-centered research, the project seeks to address the communication gaps inherent in digital conversations, ultimately fostering healthier and more transparent relationships.

The Problem Statment
Why Focus on Early Romantic Relationships?
In the initial stages of romantic relationships, communication often takes place primarily through text-based conversations. However, the lack of non-verbal cues such as tone of voice and body language can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. This project arose from the need to explore how educational interventions could be integrated into digital communication tools to enhance understanding and reduce the risk of miscommunication. The research question guiding this investigation is: How can interaction design principles be applied to create tools that improve communication and understanding in text-based conversations during the early stages of romantic relationships?
Key Insights from Research

Digital Conversations as Emotional Anchors
The reserch identified text-based communication as a critical component in forming emotional bonds in modern relationships. Unlike traditional face-to-face interactions, text-based relationships rely heavily on written language to convey emotions, intentions, and thoughts, making these conversations the emotional anchors of the relationship.

Navigating Ambiguity in Text-Based Communication
One of the central challenges identified was the inherent ambiguity of text communication. The absence of vocal tone, body language, and immediate feedback often leads to misinterpretations and misunderstandings. The research highlighted how individuals navigate these ambiguities and the strategies they employ to ensure clarity and maintain the emotional tone of their conversations.

Temporal Dynamics of Texting
Timing and frequency of text messages play a significant role in shaping the trajectory of a relationship. Delays in response, message timing, and the overall rhythm of conversation can influence how connected or distant individuals feel. The project underscores the importance of temporal dynamics in maintaining the flow of communication and emotional closeness.

Relying on a Friend to Understand
Interviews showed that individuals with experience tend to relay on a friend to clarify what the intent behind the messages was. This reliance highlights a common practice where individuals seek external perspectives to interpret and clarify the intent of digital communications, particularly in early romantic relationships. Such interactions underscore the challenges and complexities of text-based conversations, where misunderstandings can frequently arise.
Design Process
Conceptual Framework
I leveraged a conceptual framework to analyze the issue of misinterpretation in chat communication, breaking it down into key components: context, relationships, form, perception, and assumptions. Each factor is examined to understand its role in causing misunderstandings, with the framework discerning whether a simple UI change could address the problem or if more advanced AI solutions are required. AI emerged as a promising solution for handling complex aspects like context and perception, offering a more dynamic approach to reducing misinterpretation.
Ideation & Prototyping
A speculative artificial intelligence was introduced, designed to analyze text-based conversations in real-time and offer users insights and suggestions to clarify their messages and avoid potential misunderstandings. The AI provides context-specific advice to help users express their thoughts and emotions more clearly, facilitating smoother and more effective communication. To explore the concept thoroughly and develop a coherent user journey, lo-fi and hi-fi iterations were created, allowing an in-depth understanding of how AI and UI solutions could be integrated to reduce miscommunication.
AI as a friend
The AI was envisioned to act as a supportive friend, offering guidance and advice during text-based conversations in early romantic relationships. By analyzing the tone, context, and content of messages, the AI aimed to provide insights that could help users navigate misunderstandings and interpret the intentions behind their partner's words more accurately. This "AI friend" was designed to be an impartial mediator, offering advice that could help users better understand each other and foster healthier communication patterns. The result turned into an analysis that guided the user through three steps, Diagnostics, Interpretations, and Advice / Response.

User Tests & Reflection
The user tests provided valuable insights into the prototype's strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, participants appreciated the design's depth, interactivity, and user-friendly layout. The prototype was particularly effective in navigating conversational nuances, offering advice, and addressing ethical concerns, which made it a more refined tool for improving communication in early romantic relationships. The educational aspect was also well-received, with users acknowledging its potential to assist in resolving misunderstandings and enhancing text-based interactions.
However, Privacy concerns emerged, with participants expressing unease over sharing sensitive relationship details with an AI system. Additionally, there were questions about the AI's ability to effectively connect information from text-based interactions with the context of physical conversations, potentially leading to gaps in understanding.
The Outcome
Limitations of contemporary AI
The tests revealed significant limitations. The reliance on AI for emotional analysis was a primary concern, as the current capabilities of AI in natural language processing are still inadequate for accurately capturing the full range of human emotions. This limitation coupled with ethical concerns around privacy and consent highlighted the challenges of using AI in such sensitive contexts.
However, the concept of a supportive "helping agent" was still deemed valuable. Users appreciated the potential of having a tool that could offer guidance and facilitate clearer communication, suggesting that with improvements, the helping agent could play a significant role in assisting users to navigate complex conversations and prevent misunderstandings.
